Bhubaneshwar takes its name from Tribhuneshwar, a form of Shiva and most of the old temples in the town are dedicated to him. Almost every corner in Bhubaneshwar is filled with monuments – temples, rock-cut caves and monasteries. Besides the Buddhist and Jain sites, I saw a temple almost everywhere in the old town. I went to the 1000-year old Lingaraja temple dedicated to Harihara. I was mesmerised by the architecture that was so typical of the Kalinga style. The largest temple in Bhubaneshwar, I was taken in by the sheer vastness of the shrine but photography was not allowed. Walking around the town, I satiated the photographer in me by clicking every other temple that I found. Five temples stand out in my mind of the lot that I saw – the Raja Rani temple, Mukteshwara temple followed by Brahmeshwara, Parasurameswara and Bhaskareshwara temples.Raja Rani TempleDated around 11th century, this beautiful temple located amidst manicured lawns was called Indreshwar temple and is often referred to as the temple of love.
