Palace of Versailles, France -Also know as Château de Versailles or just Versailles, the palace is a stunning celebration of French art and architecture. Louis XIII built it as a hunting lodge, which his son Louis XIV transformed into an opulent palace with elaborately designed grounds featuring mazes, gardens, and fountains. In fact, Louis XIV liked it so much he moved the entire court and government from Paris to Versailles in 1682, and made it the official royal residence. Today, visitors walking through the magnificent palace can see how lavishly the celebrated Sun King lived in his ornate residence.
